Single Review: EREZ - “Modern Dream”

Beautifully combining jazzy piano, hypnotizing percussion and vocal effects, alongside innovative electronic elements, "Modern Dream" is quite perfectly a song of the time.

A camera spinning around choreographed bodies moving in slow motion around a grand piano amongst blue and purple lighting - this is the visual I have in my mind while listening to the newest single from NYC born Israeli-raised queer artist and producer EREZ.

“Modern Dream” preludes a forthcoming project from EREZ, which we can only hope is a full album because this single is absolutely enchanting. This mid-tempo ballad laments a modern world, which has left the dreams of younger generations in the hands of ambivalent technology that the artist lyricize’s as “the regime” and “the machine”. The combination of the lyrics and EREZ’s raspy alto voice is angsty, haunting, and beautiful.

The production centers around slow moving piano chords, but comes alive around the choruses with massively spatial crescendos and reverb soaked pitched voice accents. It’s a pop leaning, underground inspired kind of sound that will be interesting to even the snobbiest of underground music snobs, while being comfortable enough to share with all the passive algorithm music listeners in your life. Overall, I have a new artist on my radar and wondering what full length debut might sound like.

The single has been played on Los Angeles station KCRW and premiered on the loved Los Angeles based radio station Dublab and is set for release on April 30th. Make sure to check out more of EREZ’s work and music and let us know what you think of “Modern Dream”.
